With only a two-year college career at Itawamba Community College, Horn has climbed the pro football ladder to earn a multiple Pro-Bowl births and establish himself as the Saints top offensive weapon and one of the NFL’s elite receivers.
Joe's pro career started with much more humble beginnings. After two seasons at Itawamba (Mississippi), Horn decided to purse a pro career rather than continue his career at a four-year university. He attended an ELITE Combine in April 1994 and, though ineligible to sign with an NFL team, he was able to impress the Canadian Football League. He was signed by the Memphis Mad Dogs in 1994 and played with the team for two years.
After gaining NFL draft eligibility in 1996 he was selected in the 5th round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. His first two seasons in Kansas City were spent on special teams, totaling only 4 receptions at WR during that span. His stock began to rise in 1998 and 1999 as he amassed 49 receptions for 784 yards and 7 touchdowns. His 6 touchdowns on only 35 receptions in 1999 displayed Horn’s big play and caught the attention of Saints management.
In 2000 the Saints, signed Horn to a four-year deal at $2 million per season. At the time of the signing Saints GM Randy Mueller stated, “We didn't settle on Joe Horn. We wanted him. He was our guy. I think he has the ability to take it to the next level, and I think he could be a really special player if he just gets the opportunity." Horn has gone on to prove those words very prophetic.
In 2002, Joe was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl and first as a starter. He totaled 88 catches for 1,312 yards and seven TDs, ranking 5th in the NFC in receptions.
From 2000-2002 Horn had 265 receptions for 3,917 yards and 24 touchdowns. His 2000 numbers were the finest ever for a Saints wide receiver, totaling 94 receptions for 1,340 yards (14.3 yard average, 52 long) and eight touchdowns. His reception total ranked fourth in the NFC and his yardage total was fifth in the conference.
