Jay was signed by two Arena League teams (Florida Bobcats in 1999 and Tampa Bay Storm in 2000) after attending a 1999 ELITE Regional Combine in Atlanta.
in 2001, Jay was signed by the Atlanta Falcons and took over the placekicking job after beating out 5th round draft pick Jake Arians in training camp.
He had a very successful rookie campaign, making 29 of 37 field goals (.784) and connecting on all 28 PAT’s for a total of 115 points. His 29 field goals were second most in Falcons history and the 115 points was third most in a season in team history and led all rookies. He was named to All-NFL rookie first-team by Pro Football Weekly and Football News.
Last season Jay moved into fifth place on the Falcons all-time scoring list with a season total of 89 points. He connected on 19 of 27 field goals and 32 of 33 PAT’s.
In 2002, Jay set new Falcons records for most points in a season (138), most field goals (32) and most field goal attempts (40). His 32 field goals were tied for the highest in the NFL, the 40 attempts were tops in the NFL and the 138 points were second best in the league.
