Super Repeat for Vinatieri February 2, 2004 - ELITE alumnus Adam Vinatieri made the game-winning kick in a Super Bowl for the second time in his career yesterday with a 41 yard kick with four seconds remaining in Super Bowl XXXVIII that gave the Patriots a thrilling 32-29 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
QB Tom Brady lead the Patriots on a 37 yards drive with 1:08 to play in a 29-29 game to give Vinatieri the opportunity for the winning kick. The drive was set up when Panther kicker John Kasay sent his kick-off out of bounds and gave the Patriots the ball at their own 40 yard line. In an almost identical situation two years earlier, Vinatieri kicked a 48 yard FG as time expired in Super Bowl XXXVI to clinch the Patriots 20-17 victory over the heavily favored Rams. Vinatieri has rightfully earned the label as one of the best clutch kickers in NFL history. He has now kicked 15 game-winning field goals in the final minute of the fourth quarter or overtime in just eight seasons, including his two Super Bowl kicks. Vinatieri attended ELITE in 1995 and began his pro career in NFL Europe before signing as free-agent with the New England Patriots in 1996. |
