Four SC Alumni Among AFL’s Top 20 Greatest Players

January 20, 2006 - Four Scout Camp alumni were recently named among The 20 Greatest Players in AFL history, as chosen by the AFL’s 20th Season Historical Committee.

Scout Camp alumnus Barry Wagner ranked second on the top twenty list with 135 points, falling just one point shy of being chosen the AFL’s all-time greatest player.

Wagner won six consecutive Ironman of the Year awards from 1992-1997 and three ArenaBowl championships.  He was a four-time ArenaBowl Ironman of the Game award recipient.  Wagner attended Scout Camp in 1991.

Also making the AFL’s top 20 players list were Scout Camp alumni Sylvester Bembery, seventh; Sherdrick Bonner, eighth; and Greg Hopkins, fourteenth.

Sylvester Bembery was on the All-Arena team six times and won two ArenaBowl championships.  He attended Scout Camp in 1989.

Sherdrick Bonner was on the All-Arena team five times. He also holds the record of most wins (94) by an AFL quarterback and has won two ArenaBowl championships.  Bonner attended Scout Camp in 1993.

Greg Hopkins was an All-Arena team member four times, Ironman of the year winner, and All-Ironman team member four times.  Hopkins attended Scout Camp in 1996.

Other Scout Camp Players that received votes for the top twenty players of all-time included Mike Black, Cecil Doggette, Fred Gayles, Andy Kelly, Lawrence Samuels, and Calvin Schexnayder.

Scout Camp combines have been the exclusive combines for the Arena Football League since 1991 and have produced over 700 AFL players.
